Understanding health from curing this one symptom of perimenopause and menopause

Night sweats, frequent migraines, two weeks of PMS every month, skin outbreaks and eczema are just some of the perimenopause symptoms that I used to experience in my 40s, before I came across the understanding of innate health that I now share in my work.

Five years ago, I had an insight that allowed me to see how I was creating stress and imbalance in my life. At the time, I thought it might help my PMS. Instead, within days, all my symptoms disappeared.

Looking back at how I experienced my symptoms, there was one symptom that behaved differently from the rest.

The eczema on my hands flared up every time I came into contact with bathroom soap that was laden with chemicals. Washing my hands at a restaurant or at the homes of family and friends would have an immediate impact. I realized that by being careful around what soap I came into contact with, I was able to keep my eczema under control.

Eczema felt like a symptom that was outside in. There were chemicals out there that did not agree with my skin and avoidance of them was key.

However, when all my perimenopause symptoms disappeared, I noticed that my sensitivity to different soaps disappeared too.

The soaps in the world didn’t change. I still come into contact with brands of soap that used to make my hands red and raw. But my ability to detoxify the chemicals in the soap was altered.

The stress I was experiencing during the sensitive time of midlife change, impaired my ability to cope with the nasty stuff I encountered in the world. While I could choose what soap to have at home, there was a limit to how far I could control what toxins I might encounter elsewhere.

However, embracing my innate health and experiencing a heightened sense of well-being, allowed my body to detoxify as it is designed to. Today, while I still strive to use natural products wherever I can, I know that my body is in the best place to cope with any chemicals I may encounter in less-than-natural soaps.

My body’s default is to know how to detoxify. Your body’s default is too.

My experience with eczema reminds me of the current situation with the coronavirus.

As we’re seeing by the large number of asymptomatic cases of COVID-19, and the vulnerability of certain populations in this crisis, simple exposure to a virus does not determine how the virus will impact us. There are underlying principles of health that determine if an individual will experience sickness following virus exposure.

In a briefing held on March 20, 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, offered advice on looking after your health at all times, and “to help you fight COVID-19 if you get it." He suggested that people around the world should: 1. Eat a healthy and nutritious diet, which helps the immune system function properly. 2. Limit your alcohol consumption, and avoid sugary drinks. 3. Don’t smoke. 4. Exercise. 5. Look after your mental health.

As I pointed out in this blog post, perimenopause and menopause encourage us to wake up to principles of good health.

Our bodies are designed to guide us to good health through communicating with us when we’re off a healthy path. Our bodies can only communicate with us through feelings and symptoms but we need to recognize that form of communication if we want to live in wellness – no matter what “toxins are in the soap” and what viruses are currently going around.

When I brought my body back into balance, it was in a much better place to work smoothly and thus my symptoms disappeared.
