The latest trend in meno medical spin is to blame your brain for the waves of heat often associated with midlife change.
If your brain is to blame, surely a medical solution is needed to reduce night sweats and hot flushes!
The new made-up story claims that menopause comes as a shock to the estrogen receptors in your brain, causing a malfunction.
But why would menopause be a shock?
We know that women have lived beyond menopause throughout written history. Why wouldn’t the brain know that menopause was always on the cards?
What makes more sense?
1. Reflecting on causation and correlation
If the drop in hormones that signals menopause was responsible for night sweats and hot flushes, all women who go through menopause should experience these symptoms. Not all women do. We should be examining other variables.
2. Respecting the body and its use of heat.
The body uses heat during other sensitive times of hormonal change (adolescence, pregnancy and postpartum).
The body also uses heat to boost immune responses. For years, fevers were feared rather than understood as part of a healing process.
We don’t have to understand why the body turns up the heat during times of hormonal change in order to respect it.
If night sweats and hot flushes are so intense that they impair our sense of well-being, it’s a sign that some part of our emotional, spiritual or physical life is out of balance. That’s not a judgement; it’s a wake-up call!
Suffering is not inevitable during peri/menopause.
3. Let’s talk about stress
Most of us have already worked out that stress makes symptoms worse. Yet, stress is so rarely discussed in the menopause space.
There’s a belief that persistent stress is just a regular part of modern life. But even without changing our circumstances, it doesn’t have to be!
I’ve worked with many women who have seen a huge reduction in night sweats and hot flushes not from trying to manage their hormones, but by gaining an understanding of how we can live with less stress, and experience a greater sense of well-being, simply and naturally.
You don’t need to manage your hormones or even "fix" the hormone receptors in your brain to witness symptoms fall away. What a relief!
